Conservation efforts in the United Kingdom have been focused on safeguarding a rare bird species known as the Montagu’s harrier. According to conservationist Mark Thomas, the recent success in protecting the British population of these birds can be largely credited to one exceptionally prolific male bird named AU. This 10-year-old bird has fathered 16 offspring, with 10 of them born in the last two years, earning him the nickname “golden boy.”
Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe and spend their winters in Africa and parts of Asia. Despite being classified as a species of least concern globally, their population is declining. In the UK, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reports a rapid decrease in the number of Montagu’s harriers over the years.
The remarkable breeding success of AU has played a crucial role in sustaining the species in the UK. His acrobatic mating displays have attracted the attention of female birds, resulting in successful nesting and the birth of six chicks this year. Conservationists are optimistic that AU’s sons will eventually return to breed in the UK, with two male offspring from 2025 already sighted in the country.
To protect the newly hatched chicks, conservationists have established top-secret nesting sites on a British farm, carefully guarded against predators. The RSPB has also attached satellite trackers to two juvenile harriers for the first time, allowing researchers to monitor their movements and migration patterns. This initiative aims to track the birds’ progress and ensure the continued conservation of the Montagu’s harrier population in the UK.
