At the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly event and later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition. She achieved a personal-best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, finishing behind American Gretchen Walsh, who won in 55.15 seconds. Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.
Expressing her joy, Ruck mentioned that she had good rest between prelims and finals, allowing her to trust her body’s abilities. She also performed well in previous events, clinching a bronze in the 100m backstroke and contributing to the women’s 4x100m medley relay team’s bronze medal.
On the other hand, McIntosh faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final of the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final. The world-record holder took full responsibility for the misjudgment, expressing frustration and determination to learn from the experience.
In another event, McIntosh secured a silver in the women’s 200m freestyle and bounced back to win gold in the 400m individual medley. Meanwhile, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney highlighted the significance of both athletes reaching the podium.
Ruck continued her successful streak by guiding Canada to a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay event with a strong performance alongside her teammates. The Canadian women’s team finished third, while the U.S. and Australia clinched gold and silver, respectively.
However, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium spot, finishing fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
