To celebrate its centenary, the Royal Canadian Legion is offering free membership to first-time joiners across the country.
While remaining committed to supporting veterans and hosting community events, legions are evolving to meet the changing needs of their members. The Legion has seen a significant increase in membership, with over 100,000 new members joining in 2026, pushing the total membership beyond 300,000. Despite successes, some branches have faced closures due to financial challenges, prompting others, like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, to innovate and expand their services.
President Dennis Mills shared how the Bala Legion transformed from near closure to a thriving hub by offering affordable meals, concerts, and opening its doors to all. The Bala Legion’s future plans include developing affordable housing units on its premises to ensure sustainability. Mills stressed the importance of attracting new members to ensure the Legion’s continued vitality and community service.
