The Vancouver Rise have received additional support with the recent signings of two defenders. This move aims to strengthen the team before their upcoming crucial match against the Halifax Tides on Saturday. Chantelle Swaby, formerly with Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen, who played for NSL side AFC Toronto, have joined the Rise to contribute valuable skills as the team strives to position itself for the playoffs, according to head coach Anja Heiner-Moller.
Swaby, aged 28, brings a wealth of experience, having played in various leagues such as the National Women’s Soccer League, the Scottish Women’s Premier League, and France’s top division. She is known for her composure in high-pressure game situations and her vocal leadership on the defensive line. On the other hand, Hansen, aged 26, is excited to return home to Vancouver, expressing her anticipation to play in front of a local crowd and be close to her family once again.
These signings come after the retirement of Mariah Lee, a veteran forward who decided to pursue a career in law and stepped away from professional soccer. Additionally, Vancouver bid farewell to goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan, who was loaned to the Halifax Tides for the remainder of the season.
The Rise, the reigning NSL champions with a current record of 5-9-1, are working towards securing a playoff spot, trailing Halifax by five points. Forward Jessica De Fillippo emphasized the significance of this stage of the season, highlighting the team’s determination to return to the playoffs and showcase their competitive spirit to fans and the league.
