A prosecutor informed jurors during the opening statements of a murder trial that a former leader of a street gang orchestrated the 1996 drive-by shooting of hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for his nephew’s beating. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a single murder charge using a deadly weapon in Clark County, Nevada, and has pleaded not guilty. Davis allegedly organized a group of men to carry out the shooting near the Las Vegas Strip.
The prosecutor emphasized that Davis ensured the shooters were armed and prepared to carry out the attack. Recent public statements by Davis have shed new light on the long-dormant case. Defense attorney Michael Sanft argued that after 30 years, there is minimal evidence to support the case against Davis, casting doubt on Davis’s credibility based on his inconsistent statements in interviews and his book.
The killing of Shakur amplified the perception of violence within hip-hop culture, particularly during the peak of “gangsta” rap, fueling tensions between East Coast and West Coast rap scenes. Police arrested Davis in 2023 after years of suspicion but lacked substantial evidence until his self-incriminating public statements. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, is anticipated to last up to six weeks and might include testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, who was present at the scene of Shakur’s murder.
Authorities described Davis as the mastermind behind avenging his nephew’s assault by Shakur and his entourage, leading to the fatal shooting. The incident stemmed from a clash between two rival Los Angeles street gangs, resulting in Shakur’s death and Knight sustaining minor injuries. Davis, allegedly responsible for providing the murder weapon, directed the assailants to target Knight and Shakur’s vehicle, culminating in the fatal shooting.
Davis’s public statements in 2018 reignited the dormant murder investigation, with his memoir detailing his involvement in the shooting. Although it remains unclear who fired the fatal shots, Nevada law enables charging Davis with murder for his role in the crime. Davis’s book also implicated him in the unsolved deaths of Shakur and another rapper, Christopher Wallace, known as the Notorious B.I.G., suggesting a potential connection between the two incidents.
