Growing up as a Filipina Canadian and a Vancouver resident, my introduction to the world of hockey began during the 2010 Winter Olympics. It was a thrilling experience witnessing Sidney Crosby’s iconic golden goal that united the nation in celebration. As a recent immigrant from the Philippines, I was astounded by how a hockey victory could bring together an entire country in jubilation. This event sparked my curiosity about the sport, leading me to integrate hockey into my new life in Canada.
Attending my first live hockey game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Anaheim Ducks, was a pivotal moment. The electric atmosphere of the game, surrounded by passionate fans in orange jerseys, left a lasting impression on me. It was then that I began to grasp the significance of hockey in my new city, Edmonton. The sport wasn’t just a pastime but a cultural phenomenon deeply ingrained in Canadian society.
As I delved deeper into the world of hockey, I learned about the intense rivalry between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames, known as the “Battle of Alberta.” Hockey in Canada transcends being merely a sport; it holds a sacred place in the hearts of its people, akin to a religion. Wayne Gretzky, a hockey legend, epitomizes this reverence for the game, as I discovered through online research and videos.
Embracing my newfound passion for hockey, I began following games on TV, eagerly anticipating marquee matchups like the Battle of Alberta. My enthusiasm for the sport grew, evident in the Oilers logo towels adorning my kitchen to show my support. Immersing myself in hockey culture allowed me to engage in conversations with colleagues and feel a sense of belonging in my new Canadian life.
In 2016, I relocated to Vancouver and met Mike, a fellow hockey enthusiast. Our shared love for the sport reignited my passion for hockey, as we bonded over Saturday night games and nachos. Our relationship blossomed around our mutual appreciation for hockey, with Mike even becoming an Oilers fan in addition to his Canucks allegiance.
Through Mike’s guidance, I deepened my understanding of hockey terminology and game dynamics, transitioning from a novice to an informed fan. Despite our differences in backgrounds and interests, we embraced our diversity and found common ground through our shared love for sports. As I introduced Mike to the world of tennis, reciprocating his hockey teachings with tennis terms, our relationship flourished amidst our shared passions.
Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver became a cherished tradition for us, where we proudly sported our respective Canucks and Oilers jerseys. Our love for hockey symbolizes the unifying power of sports, transcending boundaries and fostering connections. From my initial exposure to hockey during the 2010 Olympics to present day, my journey with the sport has been a testament to its ability to ignite patriotism, foster community, and enrich relationships, embodying the essence of my Canadian experience.
